Feedback on 911 Ohlins Install

Balance Motor Sport ran some numbers and came up with a modified Ohlins Road and Track kit for the Porsche 911 964. Here is the feeback from the customer

"Car suspensions are tricky..............

Car suspensions in my personal view are a tricky thing to get right as everyone has their own idea of how a car needs to be set up. Everyone is going to have a different idea of what they are looking to gain from what an aftermarket suspension set up and kits offers them.

For me I went through this back in the late 1980s, with a VW Scirocco MK2. I had a completely new suspension kit that included Eibach spring set, fitted to the car. I ended up with a car that handled unbelievable well, but was almost impossible to drive on the road day to day.

So, to the present day, I have a Porsche 911 (964) and the current suspension set has been on the car for some 30 years. It therefore comes as no surprise the current suspension was failing. The handling and ride were so poor the car felt unsafe.

Having looked at the various suspension kits for my car and my interpretation of what I wanted; I have always really wanted an Ohlins kit. Though this is far too track focused for my requirements, so the Bilstien B16 kit - that appeared to be road focused - was the kit for me!

Bilstien were not manufacturing kits for Porsche 911 (964) at the time I was looking to have the works done, and there was no lead-time to when the suspension kits would be available from Bilstien.

This called for serious homework on my part to find someone who could put together a suspension kit for my car. After some internet research and followed by phone calls to find out actually what was available, I found a small knowledgeable business called Balance Motorsport. I was slowly but surely being impressed with Julian Spender. He was quoting me ratios and hertz, listening to what I wanted, and most importantly understanding that for me, I didn’t want to end up with a harsh ride.

I told Julian, that I really wanted Ohlins suspension kit. I am motorcyclist and on motorbikes, to me Ohlins, is an impressive bit of kit. Julian said this is achievable for my Porsche and went about doing his research. He came back with a complete specification for the car, putting together a suspension kit from the Ohlins catalogue and ordering his bespoke specification kit from Ohlins.

I agreed a date with Julian at Balance motorsport for the works to be carried out and after a couple of days the new suspension kit was fitted to my Porsche 911 (964) and wow what a ride! It is so much more useable and has transformed the 30-year-old car into a more modern-day car.

So, for me a completely successful experience and in turn makes my old car so much more driveable and fun than ever before." Stuart
