Rear Mount Turbocharging

Rear Mount Turbocharging

Balance Motorsport had the 205 GTi Project Car featured in Practical Performance Car due to its unusual rear mounted turbocharger installation. It was back in 2007 when looking for a simple, cost effective and reliable way to extract more power from the archaic 8v 205 engine, I came up with the idea of a rear mounted turbo.

It might look like a simple bolt on mod, however failure is avoided by some sensible calculations made in choosing the correct turbo, looking in particular at the compressor map and turbine exducer, as well as flow vs compressor map, dynamic compression and intake sizing. As a result of this process Balance Motorsport are delighted to be able to offer STS turbo kits for sale in the UK. Holley are now the owners of this technology. Surely that is evidence enough it works, and it works very well.

We can supply single and dual turbo kits from around 400hp plus - if you have a smaller engine then get in touch and we can make something bespoke.

Undoubtedly Rear Mount Turbocharging has its doubters. The dyno results though see more power per pound of boost than any competing Turbo technology at low boost levels. There is a reason that the old F1 era Turbo cars from the 80's ran the turbo as far as possible from the head on a tubular manifold. This is due to the remote location of the turbo delivering a colder charge with lower underbonnet temperatures.
