Chat GPT on Suspension

Chat GPT on Suspension

Chat GPT was launched in November 22, I started having a go with it in December. I've had numerous conversations with it. Whilst it is impressive in many areas (ask it to make up a story about a Lion a Lobster and an Orangutan), there is no doubt it's not a substitute for human experience.

It seems great at making up stories but less good with facts. It also has far too much "nanny state" programmed into its responses.

However I was glad that it agreed with me about the misuse of the word dampening - even if it did get it wrong first time.

Me: What do you know about car suspension?

CHATGPT: Car suspension is a system of components that connects a vehicle to its wheels and allows the wheels to move independently of the vehicle body. The main function of a car's suspension is to provide a smooth and comfortable ride for the occupants by absorbing the shocks and vibrations caused by the movement of the wheels over bumps and rough road surfaces. Suspension systems also play a critical role in the handling and stability of a vehicle by controlling the vertical and lateral movement of the wheels and tires.

There are several types of suspension systems used in cars, including independent suspension, dependent suspension, and hybrid suspension. Independent suspension systems allow each wheel to move independently of the others, which can provide better ride comfort and handling. Dependent suspension systems link the movement of the wheels on one axle, which can be simpler and cheaper to manufacture but may not provide as good a ride or handling as independent systems. Hybrid suspension systems combine elements of both independent and dependent suspension systems.

Suspension components typically include springs, shock absorbers, and control arms. Springs are used to absorb and dampen the shocks and vibrations from the road surface and help maintain the ride height of the vehicle. Shock absorbers are used to dampen the oscillations of the springs and help control the movement of the wheels. Control arms are used to connect the suspension components to the chassis of the vehicle and allow the wheels to move up and down as needed.

In addition to these basic components, many modern suspension systems also include various electronic and hydraulic control systems that can adjust the suspension settings in real-time to optimize ride comfort, handling, and stability. These systems can include sensors that detect the road surface and vehicle movement, as well as actuators that adjust the suspension settings based on this information.

Me: You used the word dampen - this is incorrect - the term is damp. It is a damper, which damps. If it is adjustable you would say adjustable damping - not dampening.

CHATGPT: Thank you for bringing this to my attention. You are correct that "dampen" is not the correct term in this context. The correct term is "damp," as in "to reduce the intensity or severity of something." A shock absorber or damper is a device that is used to damp the oscillations of a spring and help control the movement of the wheels. An adjustable damper is one that allows the damping force to be adjusted, usually by means of a valve or other mechanism. I apologize for any confusion my previous response may have caused.

Me: Could you possibly avoid using American English - for example "apologize" - please use "apologise"

CHATGPT: I apologize (or apologise) for using American English in my previous response. As an artificial intelligence, I am programmed to understand and use a wide range of languages and dialects. However, I do not have a specific preference for any particular language or dialect, and I will use the form of English that is most appropriate for the context and audience.

In general, it is common for artificial intelligence language models like me to use standard American English as their default form of English, since this is the form of English that has been most commonly used in the training data used to develop the model. However, I am able to understand and respond to a wide range of variations in English, including variations in spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and usage. If you have a preference for a specific form of English, please let me know and I will do my best to use that form in my responsesjulian@greenshrimp.co.uk

Me: could you use British English?

CHATGPT: Certainly, I can use British English in my responses if that is your preference. As an artificial intelligence, I am programmed to understand and use a wide range of languages and dialects, including British English. I can use British English spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and usage in my responses.

For example, in British English, some common spelling differences from American English include:

  • "analyse" (American: "analyze")
  • "defence" (American: "defense")
  • "grey" (American: "gray")
  • "honour" (American: "honor")
  • "labour" (American: "labor")
  • "theatre" (American: "theater")

There are also some differences in vocabulary between British English and American English. For example, in British English, a "travelling bag" is called a "suitcase," and a "bonnet" is the hood of a car.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions or if there is anything else I can help with.

Me: OK so what is the engine under in a car?

CHATGPT: The engine in a car is typically located under the hood, which is the metal cover that is located at the front of the car. The hood is typically hinged at the front of the car and can be opened to allow access to the engine and other components located at the front of the vehicle. The engine is the power source of the car and is responsible for generating the energy that is needed to move the car.

The engine is connected to the transmission, which is a system of gears that is used to transmit the power from the engine to the wheels of the car. The transmission is typically located towards the rear of the engine, and it is connected to the driveshaft, which is a long shaft that runs from the transmission to the rear wheels of the car. The driveshaft is responsible for transferring the power from the transmission to the rear wheels, which is what causes the car to move.

In front-wheel drive cars, the engine is typically located at the front of the car and is connected directly to the front wheels through the transmission. In rear-wheel drive cars, the engine is typically located at the front or the middle of the car, and the power is transmitted to the rear wheels through the driveshaft. In all-wheel drive cars, the engine is typically located at the front or the middle of the car, and the power is transmitted to all four wheels through a complex system of driveshafts and differentials.

Me: you said you would use British English?

CHATGPT: I apologize for not using British English in my previous response. As an artificial intelligence, I am programmed to understand and use a wide range of languages and dialects, and I am able to use British English in my responses if that is your preference. Here is my previous response with the spelling and vocabulary adjusted to British English:

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions or if there is anything else I can help with.

And so it goes on and on - if you made it this far you can see it's a little like pulling teeth sometimes. If you want to know about Suspenion you could ask CHATGPT or you could get a copy of my book or call us on 01903 879111.
