Morris A Series Tune up

Morris A Series Tune up

Balance Motor Sport were asked to spice up a 1967 A-Series 1098cc engine - this one in a Morris Minor. Having done a lot of work on these engines many moons ago I had a good idea of a combination of parts to work for the customer. He didn't want or need high horsepower, if he did the obvious route would be to replace the small bore engine with the 1275cc "big bore" version. He did however want good throttle response and torque. We modifed the cylinder head according the David Vizard book to maximise gasflow by unshrowding the inlet and exhaust valves and a big 80 thou skim to get the compression back and increased to 9.5:1. Add in an LCB exhaust, a SU HIF44 carb and high lift rockers and when it's rolling road tuned it should be making approx 65-70HP - not a lot, but when it came to us it was running so badly, we estimated about 25HP!

We needed to add Kent Cams double valve springs as the factory spring went coilbound with the high lift rockers.
