What are coilovers? A much misused term, coilover kits normally refer to an aftermarket suspension kit which normally features a set of coil-over-damper units, the clue being in the name. Some cars don't have this as the spring and damper are separate. That is the problem with the description. The Coilover damper could well be a spring bearing telescopic unit with eye-eye fittings (e.g Caterham Seven or Lotus Elise) or a spring bearing strut with a typical pin fitting (threaded fitting which goes into a top mount e.g Porsche 911, Alfa Mito)

In addition though, Coilovers are a term used for suspension kits which feature height adjustment, rather than a true spring bearing (coilover) damper. A good example of this would be the rear suspension on typical front wheel drive car which will often be a dead beam axle. These semi-independent rear axles are made from ductile iron/steel and are designed to work with a separate spring and damper. Many of the springs feature height adjusters.

We often get asked "What is the best coilover kit?" - this usually leads to a long telephone conversation, but a happy customer because we took the time to discuss both the positives and negative of different kits. Both honestly and concisely. Please ring should you wish to discuss. We provide both fully adjustable kits where the ride height can be set along with corner weights, and some coilovers also feature damping adjustment as well.

A coilover kit offers a much stiffer spring (as you no longer use spring compressors to install) which will work the tyres harder and make the car much more like a race car. However note that only some of the kits in this section are actually suitable for circuit racing. Most are a compromise for road use as well. Racing Suspension is not suitable for use on the road

Coilovers vs Springs and Shocks

In a nutshell the main differeces are as follows: Coilovers have stiffer springs to make up for the lack of preload, They have less droop as they are shorter and this better controls roll and transient response, They're easier to swap springs on ideal for changing from Tarmac to Gravel.
